Providence, RI - The Dartmouth Mock Trial Society completed the Ocean State Invitational Tournament on November 6th, and 7th, putting up a strong showing against some of the northeast's best mock trial programs. The 2004 Ocean State Invitational Tournament, held by Brown University and Roger Williams University, hosted such recognized programs as Cornell University, Holy Cross University, and powerhouse Manchester Community College, all of which have been national qualifiers in previous years. Dartmouth's Team Silver took fourth place out of 31 teams and Team Green took 11th place. Such an outstanding showing makes this the society's most successful fall tournament to date.
Team Silver, led by captains Martie Kutcher (07) and Daniel Racic (07), with attorneys Will Dekrey (08), Ben Wilson (07) and witnesses Jennifer Fisher (08), Elizabeth Kolleeny (08), and Chenai Nettey (08) ended with a record of 7-1 which placed them third in the tournament. Martie Kutcher won an outstanding attorney award, as one of the tournament's top ten individual advocates, and Jennifer Fisher won an outstanding witness award for finishing as one of the tournament's top ten witnesses.
Team Gold made an outstanding showing against extremely strong competition. Led by captains Cordelia Zukerman (06) and Nik Nartowicz (07), attorneys Carlos Mejia (08), Stuart Reid (08), and Sean Macrae (08) and witnesses Colleen Lamarre (07), Jessica Taub (08), and Marcie Wing (06), Team Brady finished with 4 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. Carlos Mejia also brought home an award for outstanding attorney, one of only two individuals in the entire field to qualify for an award on both sides of the case.
Team Green, led by captain Michael Sarinsky (07), also finished in the top fifteen, narrowly missing the top ten to place eleventh overall with a record of 5-3. Attorneys included Megan Hamilton (06), Norah Comstock (08) and Rubina Kwon (07) with witnesses Sarah Stern (08), Paul Bousquet (08), Ozea Brown (08), and Dave Stanek (07). Dave Stanek earned an award as an outstanding witness.
In mock trial competitions, participants prepare the roles of attorneys and witnesses based upon a nationwide fact pattern provided each year by a national collegiate mock trial organization, and then try the case against teams from other colleges and universities in regional and national tournaments. Rounds are judged by practicing attorneys and judges; competitors are scored based upon the professionalism and effectiveness of the cases they present. Competitions consist of four rounds with two judges each, for a total of eight potential "ballots" to win each tournament.
Dartmouth's Mock Trial Society and its competition teams are student-led and student-directed.
The Dartmouth Mock Trial society would like to thank its faculty advisor Walter Sinnott-Armstrong. The Dartmouth Mock Trial Society is, as always, extremely grateful for the continued financial support of the Committee on Student Organizations and the Student Activities Office.
