"Snaps from October 2003 DLA Annual Meeting & CLE" |
The morning CLE program, "Law Firm Management and the Future of the Profession" was organized by
Dan Winters '91, Porzio, Bromberg & Newman - First up from the panel of Dartmouth lawyers involved with management of their own firms was William Donovan '69, President & Managing Director of Sheehan, Phinney, Bass & Green, who described his firm's development of best practices in the selection of attorneys, quality improvement, client development, online newsletters and management reports.
Bill Donovan '69 - Following Bill, Terry Light '69, a partner in Brann & Light, explained technology tools that his two-lawyer firm have found to make their practice run smoother, including WordPerfect, Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo Messenger, Win Pop-Up, Active Words and GoToMyPC.
Terry Light '69 - Richard Yurko, '75, Founder and President, Yurko & Salveson, addressed the difficulty of managing lawyers, and the importance of adopting an appropriate method of management that suits the culture of the firm and its style of communication (open or constrained).
Richard Yurko '75 - Marcy Glenn '77, a partner in Holland & Hart, discussed the ethical challenges of dealing with conflicts, especially when lawyers change firms, and current controversies over multijurisdictional practice.
Marcy Glenn '77 - Albert M. Stark '60, a shareholder in Stark & Stark, recalled the evolution of his firm from one lawyer to the complex structure of a mid-sized firm, and recommended a "wind-down" process for senior lawyers in a firm, with an eventual buy-out, allowing younger lawyers to rise into management processes.
Al Stark '60 - After a lunch in Rockefeller (pictures in following messages) and a free afternoon in a sunny, warm Hanover, the members enjoyed a Reception and Dinner at the Boathouse. DLA members were joined by President James Wright -
President James Wright - President Wright assumed his familiar role of "schoolmaster" for the evening and spoke of the history of the law protecting the "four freedoms" of higher education in light of the recent decisions of the United States Supreme Court concerning admissions procedures at the Univ. of Michigan. -
Students with the Daniel Webster Society and Mock Trial Society joined DLA members and guests after the dinner to chat with President and Mrs. Wright.
 - More photos from the luncheon, Friday cocktail party and Saturday dinner appear in responses to this message. -
