Job Description:

This position requires knowledge in environmental law and wildlife conservation. The position reports to the Litigation Director. Primary emphasis will be assisting with litigation strategies to conserve biological diversity and other programmatic work as assigned.

Duties:
-
1) Manage assigned cases under the litigation docket, which consists of claims under the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, National Forest Management Act, Federal Land Policy and Management Act, and other environmental statutes;
-
2) Actively participate in the development and advancement of Defenders' policy goals;
-
3) Help develop the network of pro bono attorneys and manage outside counsel;
-
4) Work with co-counsel in litigation which includes developing cases, drafting memoranda, pleadings and legal research;
-
5) Assist the Litigation Director in ongoing and developing litigation by drafting memoranda, pleadings and legal research; and
-
6) Advise staff on legal questions, as needed.

Qualifications:
-
1) Juris Doctor degree, admitted to the bar;
-
2) 2-4 years post-graduate experience in environmental law practice;
-
3) Strong legal research, writing, and communication skills;
-
4) Litigation experience with cases involving natural resources, public lands, endangered species act implementation or related areas;
-
5) Experience working with wildlife conservation issues and knowledge of state, federal and international resource agencies and laws, treaties and policies dealing with use and conservation of resources on public lands; and
-
6) Demonstrated commitment to the environmental movement.
