"November 2003 - STAFF ATTORNEY POSITION AVAILABLE" |
Public Citizen Litigation Group is seeking to hire a staff attorney who will conduct public interest litigation in trial and appellate courts. - Public Citizen Litigation Group is a public interest law firm founded by Ralph Nader and Alan Morrison in 1972. It engages in a wide variety of litigation in every federal circuit and in state courts around the country. Its attorneys have argued 44 cases in the Supreme Court; in addition, through its Supreme Court Assistance Project — a program in which the Litigation Group assists lawyers around the country in litigating cases of public interest — the Group participates in some fashion in 20 to 30 cases each year pending before the High Court. - Over the years, the Group has concentrated on the failure of administrative agencies to carry out statutory mandates, particularly in the health and safety area; open government litigation under the Freedom of Information Act and similar legislation and under common-law doctrines regarding access to court records; increasing the availability and affordability of legal services; opposing extravagant corporate claims of federal preemption in tort and other litigation; fighting abusive class action settlements that harm consumers; separation of powers litigation; First Amendment litigation affecting consumers, including internet free speech cases; and a variety of other general consumer and government accountability cases. In addition to their litigation responsibilities, the Group's lawyers appear before Congress and are consulted on numerous legislative and administrative matters within their areas of expertise. - We are looking for an attorney with a minimum of one year of experience (which may include a judicial clerkship). While litigation experience is preferred, attorneys at all levels of experience should not hesitate to apply. Applicants should have a solid academic record, proficiency in legal writing, and strong analytical skills. A demonstrated commitment to public interest work is preferred, and members of minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply. - The starting salary is dependent on experience. Benefits include fully paid comprehensive health insurance for the employee (and minor dependents but not spouses) and vacation starting at three weeks annually. - Applicants should send a cover letter, resume, list of references, copy of their law school transcript, and writing sample, to Achamma Kallarakal at the address shown below The writing sample should be legal in nature (brief, memorandum, or research paper) and should be the applicant's own work, not a collaborative piece or something heavily edited by someone else. It can be of any length and should be a complex piece representing the applicant's most difficult, challenging work. Please do not send an excerpt. We encourage job applicants to consult our web site (www.citizen.org/litigation/), which describes our work and contains briefs from many of our cases. An in-person interview is required. There is no application deadline, but we may fill the position at any time. The start date is flexible but will be no earlier than Jan. 1, 2004. - Public Citizen is a non-smoking environment. - Public Citizen Litigation Group 1600 20th Street NW Washington, DC 20009-1001 (202) 588-1000 FAX: (202) 588-7795 ____________ Thanks to Asa Tapley '02 for the word about this opening. -
